Webcam Spying

As a parent, you are always on the lookout for potential dangers to your child.

Such dangers come in all shapes and sizes. Just when you’ve got a handle on one issue, something else pops up. But one possible issue that you may not have considered previously is webcam spying. The idea of a person or an agency spying on your child through their laptop may seem like an overly paranoid delusion. Indeed, ten years ago that was the common belief when people thought about webcam spying. There was little evidence to prove that such a thing was even possible.

But now, we have the evidence. Webcam spying is possible, and is actually more common than you might think. This page will outline ways in which you can protect your child from webcam spying issues.

What is Webcam Spying?

Webcam spying occurs when individual hackers or government agencies use a computer or a phone webcam to spy on a person.

You might be wondering what a person or agency could possibly gain from this spying. Agencies such as the NSA use this hack to monitor people. People might hack into a webcam to take compromising photos or videos and disperse them over the internet.

Think about it – does your child listen to music or have Facebook open on their computer while getting ready in the morning or going to sleep at night? They probably don’t think twice about this, and neither do you. But very compromising screenshots could be taken of your child while they are doing something as innocent as changing their clothes.

What’s even scarier is the fact that hackers can spy without powering on the webcam light, making them virtually undetectable.

Taking Precautions – Disabling Webcams

To protect your child, there are a few different things that you can do when it comes to electronic safety.

One thing that you can do is disable the webcam on your child’s computer. Making sure that an antivirus application is installed on the computer is a good start. But, hackers can still get around an antivirus, so you need more than just that.

If your child’s computer has an external webcam, you can keep them safe by simply unplugging it. But note that many new computers have built in cameras, so this might not be possible on your child’s electronics.

For a laptop or computer that has an integrated webcam, you can disable the BIOS to prevent webcam issues. But keep in mind that this solution is only possible for some types of computers. Alternatively, you can try to disable the webcam at the OS level.

Taking Precautions – Covering Webcams

A simpler and more effective solution than disabling the webcam is merely covering it up. This will allow your child to easily remove the cover when they need to use the webcam, while providing foolproof ease of mind. A hacker can get around antivirus, but they can’t get around something that physically blocks the camera.

There are many options for covering webcams. Many of these are inexpensive options that you can buy for $5-10. These webcam covers come in different styles. Some clip on, some adhere to the computer itself, etc. Any webcam cover is a good idea.
