SSDI Application

Applying for SSDI can be daunting, especially if experiencing a new or worsening disability. The first application can easily be filed online or at a nearby SSA office. Even if you are denied, you can appeal the decision to get your case reviewed by someone else. If your appeal is denied, you may request an administrative hearing to plead your case by yourself or with a representative, like a friend or a lawyer. While the process is long and frustrating, getting help from someone else can alleviate some pressure and teach you more about what is required during this process. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your local SSA office or a lawyer to get clarification or seek help, as it could be the decision that saves your benefits.

Firstly, it is important to know the difference between SSDI and SSI. SSDI is based on how long you worked and paid taxes for Social Security, while SSI is based on your age and income/resources. SSDI is only for people that have a disability that makes them eligible. SSI requires more documentation to prove assets, income, household members, rent, etc., to show that you are under the maximum threshold for benefits.

Timeline of Application

It is important to remember that applying for SSDI could take longer than you imagine. SSDI benefits are not distributed until the sixth month of your disability, starting in the first full month after the SSA office decides when your disability began. On top of that waiting period, many applications are denied at the first stage, forcing most people to appeal their denial. If the appeal is denied, you will have to wait longer to get in front of a judge for an administrative hearing.

With all of this waiting, losing momentum or getting discouraged can be easy. Don’t forget many people are facing the same obstacle with getting SSDI, and some people can help you. Contacting a lawyer knowledgeable about disability law could save your case, as they are more aware of the process and how to solve issues in your case.

To cut down on the time you have to wait, do not wait to apply! As soon as you become disabled, start your application to begin the waiting period for benefits. This will also help you get started on an appeal as soon as possible if it’s necessary.
